MatchMaker Online Dating Site Review 2014

MatchMaker is an online dating site that promises to help you find your match.

It is not a free site but does require a basic membership fee.

It is not a very popular or well trafficked site either.

Here is what we found out when we took a closer look at the reality of dating on MatchMaker.

MatchMaker

First Impressions

The site looks good.

There are testimonials, there are resources about online dating, there is even a changing gallery of profile pictures of who just joined and the terms and conditions are easily found.

What is not to love?

Sign up for a free account, or their special introductory offer for a year and you could be on your way to finding someone real to have in your life.

A quick look at the profiles shows that this site is popular with the 30 to 40 year olds that are serious about finding someone.

It has an Alexa rating of 147,546 globally, which represents a drop of 33,946 spaces and is listed as 117,853 in the US.

In both areas its ranking has just gotten steadily worse over the past year.

A large part of that may stem from the increasing complaints that have been registered with consumer agencies, and the users have videoed and posted to social media sites.

There are three main complaints-

  1. The membership fee and introductory offer special to not accurately reflect the charges that are applied.
  2. The site is geared towards men with most of the female profiles being less than desirable
  3. The company is unresponsive to any complaints or requests for assistance.

Those are some serious issues.

While many of the features that are promoted on the site are above standard, the fact that fewer people are staying with the site because of its expense is telling.

It does look like the company is trying to address these issues as they are offering a new lower rate monthly membership.

Features

The features on MatchMaker are really basic.

You can see whole profiles and contact people without having to pay anything extra above the basic membership fee.

The search options are very complete and you can be very specific.

There are no personality matching quizzes or even assistance from the site itself.

As far as they are concerned, you are on your own.

On this site you can:

  • Browse profiles
  • Send an IM or message
  • Search by different criteria

It makes you wonder, given that almost all paid sites include their own special formula for matching people, why MatchMaker thinks they can charge without even offering a basic matching service?

In essence, this is a catalog you get to sift through with no help at all.

Price and membership

Pricing and membership for this site was a low 16.95 with a lock in period of 6 months.

The company has recently issued an introductory offer of membership for $12.95 a month for the length of one year; however the fee is required up front.

They have also stopped advertising a free signup, as many of the complaints interpreted that as an option for a free account as well.

There are also additional charges to access more features like seeing who viewed your profile, posting videos and hiding yourself from others profile viewing records.

Conclusion

MatchMaker has a lot to offer, but it is far from a perfect site.

There are more and more complaints being posted about people being scammed on the site which is a concern.

More concerning is that the company’s response to these complaints has been to lower their monthly fee, but make it an annual contract.

One of the reasons you may want to reconsider joining this site is that it can target you for scamming.

Anytime a dating site requires paid membership you are already highlighted as someone who has money to burn.

Without an adequate history of responding to consumer complaints or even offering technical support, this site may not be the best choice.

Expect that it will continue to grow in new membership as it seems to be heavily vested in marketing, but that won’t do anything to change the fact that fewer people are staying and using it to find a match.
